Mary Janes: A Candy History

Mary Jane - Peevers

Open on the Present Day:
Oh that fiddly paper that wraps Mary Janes… it’s so frustrating. All I want is a mouthful of peanut butter covered taffy deliciousness. But the paper is caught in the folds of the candy. I tease a corner with my nail, but i just tear off a tiny shred.

Cut to April 18th, 1775. Night:
Paul Revere rides from his home in the North End of Boston. The British are advancing, Revere has to rouse the militias and get to Lexington to warn them of the danger. The American War of Independence is about to begin.

Present Day:
I still can’t get the wrapper off this candy!!! I remember why I rarely eat Mary Janes.

Other Roadside Attractions

Here are some of my favourite links from the last week or so.

Fancy buying a classic all-metal diner from 1947? The seller hasn’t had much luck on eBay. Maybe you could pop it in your back yard?

Retro Roadmap visits the awesome Monument of the States in Kissimmee, Florida

Roadside America gets a rare peek inside Jungle Jim’s International Market near Cincinatti, Ohio. Well worth a look.

Meanwhile, the Candy Professor has found out the truly disturbing origin of the name “Black Crows”. Depressing.

Sticking with the food theme, Eccentric Roadside found some Oatmeal.
