The Windmill that sells Cars. Newburgh, NY

Standing by the windmill, it was there we saw the cars.

Old cars, classic cars, 60s cars, bygone cars.
Peering through the glass we saw them, perfectly restored.
The sails on the windmill frozen.

A windmill by the cars.

A windmill?

Huh?

Abraham Lincoln Morehead Jr—born in 1918—sold his first car in the 1930s. Founded Morehead Auto in 1947, in the Windmill building. Been here ever since. “Morehead Auto Sales… at the Windmill” the newspaper ads shouted. Landmark building as marketing ploy, quite brilliant.

But… a windmill?

Why a windmill?

It’s not a real windmill. The sails are made of metal; too heavy to ever rotate. The body of a windmill—or at least the roof—needs to turn to face the wind. But this one is fixed.

A windmill?

Maybe not. Maybe once. At the core it could have been a windmill, over a hundred years ago.

Now it’s a landmark.

A landmark selling cars.
